“You’re not working hard enough!” “Let’s go, you’ll never get that butt you want!” “Look at my abs. If you want abs like this, you have to work for them!”

Have you ever heard something like that from an instructor during a workout? I have and it doesn’t make me feel good. In fact, it’s part of the reason I’ve never stuck with any sort of workout routine very long.

CampusCycle is different. Coaches don’t ever comment on anyone’s body and they don’t make you feel like you’ve failed. They’re motivating, not intimidating.

Coaches open with an intention and, most of the time, a story about their personal life. They’re real people (Life’s Struggles Are Not Excuses blog). Moms, dads, teachers, nurses, fitness coaches – and they’re real people who live in our community.

They know when Iowa State plays Iowa and when it’s back to school time. They share frustrations they’ve had at work or with their kids. They are beautifully messy humans just like the rest of us. We’re all there to spend a little time on ourselves.

The other cool part? Riders and coaches come in all shapes, sizes and ages. It’s inspiring to ride beside people twice my age at 5:15 in the morning. I mean, retirees could be doing a lot of things – but they take the time to maintain their health and clear their minds at CampusCycle.

Yes, spin class is a great workout and I could get a great workout in my basement. The positive approach, the motivating coaches and the people in the room make this a place that’s so much more than a workout.
